6 miles consisting of 2 easy warm-up, 3200 on the track in 13:15 (almost right on goal marathon pace) and 2 cool-down. Felt fine, no concerns until later in the day when my right hamstring start to hurt and feel very tight.

No running. Flew to Las Vegas and drove to St. George, arriving around 7:30 p.m. local time. Bluffs Inns and Suites is not a first-class establishment but it will do. Am feeling good although the right hamstring is noticeable at times. I need to avoid over-stretching it and must also avoid worrying too much about it!

Up early because I'm still on eastern time. Just before daylight I drove to the St. George finish area and then ran about 1.5 miles back on the course then turned around and headed in. Feeling pretty good. The right hamstring is still a worry, however. Went to the expo at mid-morning after breakfast and also listened to Dick Beardsley's first talk which was quite good. Drove the course in the early afternoon and then spent a lot of time resting and watching TV. A lot of rain today but things should clear out nicely for tomorrow's race.

Went in aiming to run 2:55 and felt great during the early miles. Great marathoning conditions.

1 - 6:28

2 - 13:12 (6:44)

3 - 19:38 (6:26)

4 - 26:04 (6:26)

5 - 32:33 (6:29)

6 - 38:56 (6:23)

7 - 45:26 (6:30)

The next 4 were considerably slower (being uphill to rolling with no significant downhill). But after mile 8 (during which I noticed the altitude a bit with somewhat labored breathing) I was okay.

8 - 52:44 (7:18)

9 - 59:50 (7:06)

10 - 1:06.48 (6:58)

11 - 1:13.51 (7:03)

Took a gel at 11 and noticed a boost within 2 miles.

12 - 1:20.43 (6:52)

13 - 1:27.28 (6:45)

So all was well at the half; didn't catch my time but I estimate 1:28:12.

14 - 1:34.14 (6:46)

15 - 1:40.54 (6:40)

During mile 15 I realized my quads were really beginning to hurt from all the downhill plus I noticed that a number of people were passing me, although I really didn't want to be going any faster than 6:40.

16 - 1:47.37 (6:43)

17 - 1:54.28 (6:51)

18 - 2:01.20 (6:52)

Miles 17 and 18 worried me because I was slowing and hurting more.

19 - 2:08.26 (7:06)

It actually felt good to gain some elevation during mile 19. Took a gel during mile 19 but only consumed about 2/3 of it.

20 - 2:15.27 (7:01)

Off goal pace but still felt sub-3:00 was possible at 20.

21 - 2:22.35 (7:08)

22 - 2:30.00 (7:25)

It was really steep downhill between about 19.5 and 21 and again from about 22.0 to 22.5. I was really in distress by now with very bad quad pain. Otherwise I wasn't in terrible shape but it was hard to focus and remain determined to keep running.

23 - 2:37.27 (7:27)

24 - 2:45:08 (7:41)

After completing mile 24 I ran another 100m or so and then walked for about :30.

After that it was slow jogging mixed in with short walking breaks to the finish.

25 - 2:53.38 (8:30)

26 - 3:02.35 (8:57)

26.2 - 3:04.15 (1:40)

So the last 2.2 miles took me a little over 19 minutes! I've never, ever, had quad pain like this in a marathon. I wasn't in bad shape otherwise and feel I could have at least finished close to my 2:55 goal had I not had the terribly sore quads. And I'm quite sure I didn't drink enough during the race and may not have eaten enough yesterday. Plus, 2-3 aspirins 30 minutes prior to the start might have helped. Anyway, I loved St. George Marathon otherwise and hope to return in 2007.

John - welcome to the blog. What is your marathon PR, and what times have you run in other distances?

Have you had much opportunity to train on long downhill stretches? If not, that probably explains why your quads got so beat up.

First time I ran St. George back in 1997 my quads were so sore that I could not even run at all until Tuesday, and every step on Tuesday made me want to scream. However, after several years of downhill running combined with improvements in the diet there was a big change. Immediately after finishing St. George this year I could not tell if it was a marathon, or just a 15 mile tempo. The legs felt a bit stale, but not sore. I could jog and even hop up and down on one leg.

From JohnK on Mon, Oct 16, 2006 at 07:22:09

Sasha,

My marathon PR is 2:51 from way back in 1983 (when I was 23). Never really focused properly to improve on that, and now at 46 I don't think I'll do it! I did manage a 2:59 in early 2004 and know I can still do a little better. I ran high 1:21s for half-marathon twice in 2005, also a 1:23.24 when not 100% fit this March.

I didn't do enough hill work. I had though just running moderately hilly courses regularly would be sufficient but obviously I was wrong!

I'd like to return to St. George although it's a major trip from Georgia. So we'll see.

I'd like to donate to your efforts.

Thanks,

John

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Oct 16, 2006 at 07:31:54

John:

My predictor says with a 1:21 half and training 70 miles a week consistently it is reasonable to expect 2:49 in the marathon. I would also anticipate that training could improve your half, thus giving you some more breathing room for the marathon.

Are there any 3-4 mile downhill stretches with at least 2% steady grade anywhere around where you live? If you can find one, practice tempo running at half-marathon race pace there.

Also - seeing how the short uphill stretch brought on the full extend of the disaster, that shows you not only had your quads beat up, but also were low on fuel. I suspect your fuel storage could very well be improved with good training too. Let's see what happens. I think you have a very good shot at your life-time PR next year.

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Oct 20, 2006 at 15:13:57

I'm not yet in the same category of runner as either of you, but the treadmills at my gym go do a 3% decline, so I tried to get a fair amount of "downhill" treadmill miles in which seemed to help me on the downhill.

10 miles with several 1 minute build-ups and a few sustained ~400m efforts. Nothing too tough but a way to break up the run with a little quality and work toward harder workouts in the coming weeks when fully recovered from St. George. Chilly this a.m. -- 34 degrees, which is unusual for October in Georgia -- but just about ideal in my view.

Great idea. I found that a few pickups in the middle of an easy run accomplish two purposes. They help you keep the easy run easy. And they help you maintain good form - when you accelerate, you are forced to use better form, and in between accelerations your muscles still remember it.

11 miles with first 7 a fartlek run that included about 2 miles total near 5K race pace in 1:00 to 2:00 sections, then 3000 on UGA track in 11:26 (just a bit faster than I hope to average for a 15K road race on Nov. 18th -- am aiming for 3:50 per K in that), and 2 miles cool-down. Felt good, the 3000 was okay and certainly far from all-out although I thought it would feel a little easier even after the fartlek. Not sure I'll be ready for 57:30 in the 15K but it's a reasonable goal since I ran 57:39 last year.

Do you think you are ready for "the day does not end until I've run at least 8 miles"?

From JohnK on Fri, Oct 27, 2006 at 19:28:53

You mean a minimum of 8 miles every single day? I could manage that, and some weeks training for St. George I didn't drop below 8, but what about the day before a race?!?

I typically average 55-65 miles per week when not in marathon training. My highest weeks prior to St. George were in the low 90s (three of those) but mostly I was in the 65-75 range. I suspect I'd do better if I could build up gradually over the winter to the point where 75-80 was common and then put in more 90+ weeks before my next marathon.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
8.000.006.000.0014.00

4 mile warm-up then 10,000m solo on UGA track in 39:05 and 4 mile cool-down. Was hoping to run 38:20 which is goal pace (3:50 per K = 57:30) for a 15K race in three weeks. It was very windy and I didn't feel 100%, so after being on pace thru 4K I started slipping a bit. 5Ks were 19:16 + 19:49. I'm not really all that disappointed and believe I will be in much better form in 3 weeks.

Felt pretty good but not great. Goal was to start out with the 2000 at threshold pace (i.e., goal pace for 15K race on 11/18) and drop :01 per lap on each of the following 3 segments (so it should have been 7:40, 6:04, 4:30, 2:57) and then just finish with 400 + 200 however I felt. So I hit those times but didn't feel as good as I'd hoped. Chilly morning.

John - I have discovered that marathons tend to leave some hidden damage. You may finish one and not even feel sore. Yet a couple of weeks later something appears to be out of whack - for me it is not being able to keep my regular half-marathon race pace for more than 2 miles. You should probably just relax and take what your body will give you in the upcoming 15 K.

From JohnK on Sat, Nov 04, 2006 at 14:00:22

I'm sure you are correct, that full recovery from a marathon can take a month or longer and it's a day-to-day process. So I will try to take your advice about the 15K and accept whatever happens -- if it's an off day and I miss my goal by a minute or even more I'll just look forward to better days ahead.

Good job toughing it out. I think up to a certain point (different for everybody, for you should be around 8 miles), going the distance is more important than going fast. So when it is rough, just back off the pace and make it to the end.

Guess this is about halfway between threshold pace and marathon pace. Would hope I could run 2:00-2:30 faster in a race. Just met somebody today here in Provo,UT that is running the Atlanta Half-Marathon too. His name is Alvin.

From John on Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 21:18:25

If he hasn't run Atlanta before, please suggest that he take it out somewhat conservatively as the first 7 miles are flat to downhill (i.e., easy to go out too fast!) but the remainder is very rolling with a few tough uphill sections. There's a killer hill in mile 12 but it's only a quarter mile then you're home free. Atlanta can be a PR course for some, if the early miles aren't too quick. There could be light rain but temps will probably be close to ideal and wind is seldom a factor. Also, tell him not to expect much crowd support -- very few people out at 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving!

Miles went 6:03, 6:09, 6:03, 6:13, 6:15, 6:15 + 1:17 which was okay considering miles 4-6 have more uphill than 1-3. Now five easy days before Atlanta Half-Marathon on Thanksgiving morning.

Good luck tomorrow John. Run well, then enjoy a fat leg of turkey!

Ran 1:23.01 in the Atlanta Half-Marathon. Missed my goal time by :02 -- was aiming for a sub-1:23 -- but I'll take it. Was rather surprised to win the 45-49 division as this is a pretty big race with about 7,500 entrants. Conditions were good although it was a bit breezy but quite nice with about 40 degrees at the start. The course is not easy with a fast first 7 miles and then quite a bit of climbing the next 5.5 and a flat to downhill final 0.5. I think this indicates I could still run ~2:55 for a marathon in 2007, or at least it's reasonable to shoot for that.

Note that you are running this only a month and a half after a downhill marathon that beat up you up prety bad. So I would not take this performance as an indication of your true half-marathon potential.

I think if you train throughly through the winter methodically building a good base, you'll see some good results in the summer in all distances. Probably start with 50 miles a week, then gradually increase to 70-80 or more if you can handle it.

Your difference between your half marathon and full marathon shows that you either lack base, or there is something wrong with your body in the way of supplying energy after 90 minutes of hard running (eg. weak/unhealthy liver).

From brent on Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 10:13:55

Congradulations, it seems your 1:23 would come close to winning many half marathons. Atlanta, humidity? It seems like a darn good time.

Great time - Were you just watching the clock ticking...?

Good run anyway.

From John on Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 15:34:21

In fact I didn't see the clock until the last few seconds. I knew from getting my 12 mile split that I would be fairly close but I was more intent on catching two guys ahead of me. One had pulled away mid-race and I only started reeling him in the last three miles -- I got him maybe 200 yards out. The other guy, one of the top grandmasters in the southeast who ran 1:18 and change last year, had been well ahead of me and I was surprised to be catching him. But I was pretty well spent from overtaking the other guy and just ran out of gas -- missed by :01 clock time. Don't really mind, it was a fun race.

From evan on Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 20:17:06

1:23 seems pretty good, especially on a hard course. If I run a lot of races close together I almost always post slower times. Pick a race or two you want to PR at and focus on those, and just use the others as training, relax, bring a friend, take your watch off.

18 miles total, first 16 was 8 miles out & 8 back going out in 59:00 (7:22 pace) and back in 50:40 (6:20 pace) then 2 mile cool-down in ~15:00. First mile of the 8 back was 6:40 then I dropped to an ave. of 6:20 the next 6 and finished with a 6:00 for the 8th (a fast flat to downhill mile). Felt strong the whole way. Wore heart monitor -- was ~135 the first 8 and then ~155 the next 8. I have a max. heart rate of ~180 so this is would be about 75% for the easy 8 and then 86% the second 8.

This run plus a respectable half-marathon on Thanksgiving are inspiring me to run the Paris Mountain 20K (Greenville, SC) in two weeks. It's a tough race that I've run once ('04) but I feel in good shape to try it again.

Ran the Paris Mountain Road Race, which is a very demanding 20K that includes a steady 2.5 mile climb up Paris Mountain and also lots of rolling hills. The conventional wisdom seems to be that finish times are about equal to what one could run on an "average" half-marathon course. Anyway, I ran 1:23.19 two years ago and wanted to improve on that so I'm a little disappointed. But when I consider I've aged two years (am 46 now) I can't complain.
